What Is Outpatient Mental Health Treatment?

If you are suffering from a mental health disorder and need professional treatment, the fear of the unknown during this time can be intimidating and scary. Mental health treatment is provided to help people actively manage their illnesses so that they can live a life free from stress and worry. For each disorder, treatment almost always begins with a proper assessment to determine the structure and different kinds of therapy methods that will be needed for that individual. Customized care is very important to the success of mental illness recovery. Today, Banyan is sharing what outpatient mental health treatment is and who it benefits the most.

What Is Outpatient Psychiatric Treatment?

Both addiction and mental health care are offered in a hierarchy of treatment types, otherwise referred to as levels of care. One level of mental health care is outpatient mental health treatment, which is a non-residential form of psychiatric care.

Outpatient psychiatric treatment is helpful in a non-residential setting, meaning clients aren’t required to live at a facility while receiving treatment, as opposed to those in our residential mental health facilities in Boca. As with other mental health programs, outpatient mental health services can be tailored to the individual’s needs.

Additionally, the nature and severity of the person’s mental health will also determine how long and intensive their care will be, as well as the form of care they receive. Outpatient psychiatric recovery may include services like:

  • Individual or group counseling
  • Psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, and others
  • Psychiatric medication
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Substance abuse treatment
  • Bipolar disorder treatment
  • Anxiety treatment
  • Depression treatment
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
  • Stress management skills
  • Family therapy

No two people are the same, so no two outpatient treatment plans will be the same for our clients, either. Where one person requires one or two hours of mental health care per week, another may need more support and structure. Some outpatient mental health programs provide as many as 6 or more hours of treatment per day, several times per week. However, for those who require more intensive forms of care, a partial hospitalization program or residential level of care may be more effective.

Who Should Pursue Mental Health Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient mental health programs can be beneficial for individuals with mild to moderate mental health issues who are able to function in their daily lives but require professional support to manage their symptoms. They may also be appropriate for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment and require ongoing care and support as they transition back into their daily lives.

Additionally, outpatient programs may be a good fit for individuals who require flexibility in their treatment schedule and prefer the convenience of attending appointments while living at home. However, it's important to note that the most appropriate form of care will depend on the individual's unique needs and circumstances, and a mental health professional can provide guidance on the best course of treatment.

Benefits of Outpatient Mental Health Treatment

Outpatient mental health treatment has become an increasingly popular option for individuals seeking support for a wide range of mental health issues. This type of treatment allows individuals to receive care while still maintaining their daily routines and responsibilities and without the need for hospitalization. Additionally, outpatient treatment provides individuals with access to a range of evidence-based therapies and support services designed to promote long-term recovery and improve overall mental health and well-being.

Outpatient treatment offers many benefits:

  • Provides more convenient and accessible care for individuals who can attend appointments while living at home and continuing with their daily routines.
  • Reduces the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment by being more socially acceptable and less disruptive to one's life.
  • Offers flexibility and personalized care with treatment plans tailored to the individual's specific needs and goals.
  • Provides a range of supportive services, including therapy, medication management, and other supportive services that can be adjusted as needed.
  • Creates a supportive community of peers and professionals, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
  • Allows individuals to maintain their privacy while seeking professional care.
  • It can be less expensive than inpatient treatment while still offering high-quality care.

While outpatient psychiatric treatment offers these benefits, one should never settle for the less expensive or more flexible option if it’s not going to provide healing. Everyone deserves access to mental health treatment. If you or someone you know needs a formal diagnosis, our mental health diagnosis services can help determine the disorder and the appropriate form of care required.

Mental Health Care in Boca Raton

Once a proper assessment and mental health diagnosis are determined, an individual can expect a customized treatment plan to be created for them that goes into detail with the length of stay and the different treatment methods that will be utilized. For every client, the length of stay differs based on a variety of factors, including medical criteria, diagnosis, and insurance authorizations.

Clients can also expect mental health and behavioral health technicians to be an important component of their daily routine and to assist them with everything they will need during treatment. There should always be technicians on staff to easily guide you during treatment. Depending on the facility, the family can participate in a family group therapy session as needed.
