Signs of High-Functioning Depression

signs of high functioning depression

The signs of high-functioning depression are similar to those of major depressive disorder but aren’t as severe.

They may include minor changes in behavior and habits that make it difficult for a person to get through their day. While most people can function normally through certain symptoms of depression, they struggle a lot internally. Our center for mental health care in Boca Raton is familiar with high-functioning depression and is sharing the most common signs.

What Is High Functioning Depression?

Mental illness can vary in severity. While certain people may suffer from mental disorders that completely impair their ability to function, others may struggle with a more minor form of the same disorder. When a person is able to function through an addiction or mental illness, they’re considered

high-functioning – high-functioning depression, previously referred to as dysthymia, is a less severe form of major depressive disorder. While it can cause similar symptoms to those of depression, these symptoms may not impair the person’s ability to hold down a job, go to school, or care for their family.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that high-functioning depression is not severe. Individuals who struggle with this mental disorder should seek professional help. At Banyan Mental Health, we offer depression treatment that addresses every aspect of depression, regardless of its severity.

Signs And Symptoms Of High-Functioning Depression

The signs of high-functioning depression can be difficult to spot because the person is likely capable of carrying on a normal routine without giving away their condition. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), there are certain criteria that an individual has to meet to be formally diagnosed with high-functioning depression.

Some of the most common symptoms of high-functioning depression include:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Lowered self-esteem
  • Decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of sadness and emptiness

A person with high-functioning depression usually experiences these symptoms on most days for at least two years during which symptoms do not cease for more than two months. They may also go through these two years or longer without experiencing a moment of happiness.

Do I Have High Functioning Depression?

While the symptoms above are the most common signs of high-functioning depression, feeling any of these things is not a clear indicator that you have this condition. A proper diagnosis of depression depends on the duration of certain symptoms. It can be dangerous to assume on your own that you may have a mental disorder. If you’re experiencing high-functioning depression symptoms, the first thing you should do is speak to your doctor.

Many individuals who struggle with mental illness also seek out mental health treatment and therapy to learn healthy coping mechanisms. If you or a loved one is battling a mental disorder, call us today at 888-280-4763 to learn more about the mental health programs we offer.
