April 13, 2018The Benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Many people believe that the external situations in their life influence their mood.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) takes a different perspective, asserting that our thought patterns and reactions to our environment are what cause these mood changes. With this perspective, CBT is able to address many challenges by giving patients the ability to change their thoughts, perceptions, and behaviors to better manage their moods and reactions. Our licensed therapists at Banyan Mental Health utilize CBT to help patients change their lives for the better.
How Does Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Work?
During a CBT session, the patient and therapist meet one on one. They discuss what has happened in that patient’s life since the last meeting took place. The patient can recount the challenges they’ve faced in the previous week, and those challenges can be added to the session agenda. Then, the therapist works with the patient to identify changes that can help change the course of those challenges. CBT helps patients develop the tools they need to create their own happiness through improved patterns of thought and reaction to the world. You cannot change the actions or words of others, but you can change how you view and react to these challenges with the help of CBT.
