Stephen ‘tWITCH’ Boss’s Death & High-Functioning Depression

Stephen Boss, lovingly referred to by his stage name, tWITCH, was a sensational dancer, DJ, and media personality.

Famous for his work on ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ and ‘The Ellen Show,’ he maintained his positive persona in TikTok dance videos made with his loved ones. Tragically, Boss was pronounced dead on December 13, 2022, his passing being ruled as death by suicide. He was only 40 years old. What Is High-Functioning Depression? 

While not a clinical term, high-functioning depression is the phrase used to describe people who meet the criteria for a depression diagnosis but can still function well enough to not signal a problem to those around them. It can seem confusing, and these individuals may even be viewed as the life of the party. Boss’s death is a clear example of this. When his passing was announced, many people not only did not want to believe but truly could not wrap their heads around the idea of someone who was doing so well ending up making this irreversible choice.  

Boss’s situation highlights the severity of these experiences and should call for more care to be given even when things are all right. Just because someone is fulfilling their obligations does not always mean that there is nothing wrong. Born on Sept 29, 1982, Boss leaves behind his wife, Allison Hoker Boss, with whom he shares three beautiful children. His immeasurable talent aside, his bright persona and his clear passion for what he did are both things that should continue to be honored. In the words of his wife, "He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans. To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt."
