How Is Mental Health Diagnosed?
To diagnose a mental health disorder, you need to undergo a series of tests including a mental health assessment. Our mental health facility is here to walk you through these steps.
Physical Exam
The first step to diagnose a mental health disorder will probably be a physical exam. It is not uncommon for poor mental health to stem from a physical ailment. If there are suspected underlying physical problems, this may include lab tests as well.
Personal & Mental Health History
During the physical exam itself or after a physical ailment has been ruled out, your doctor should ask you questions about your mental health history as well as if any mental illness runs in your family. This section will probably also include questions about your own personal history to unveil any possible triggers for mental health disorders like childhood trauma or major stressors.
Psychological Evaluation
At this point, your doctor may turn you over to a mental health professional. If there are any signs suggesting a mental health disorder is present, you will be asked more in-depth questions regarding your life, symptoms, habits, and behaviors.
Cognitive Thinking Assessment
While you are asked these detailed questions, the interviewer should also take note of how easily you are able to answer these questions. You may be asked to answer simple mental reasoning questions so they can assess if you are having any problems with memory, learning, or reasoning.
It is important to note that an accurate mental health diagnosis can take time and may take a series of appointments until you have an answer. If you are found to have a mental health disorder, you should seek help immediately like with our mental health care team. It is not uncommon for people suffering from a mental health disorder to become addicted to drugs and alcohol as they attempt to cope with their pain.
