Veterans in Recovery Program

At Banyan Mental Health, we understand the mental and physical toll deployment can have on an individual. Many veterans turn to substance abuse in an attempt to cope with the mental distress they experience as a result of their time on the battlefield. Unfortunately, mental health is a common problem among veterans, and those who go without treatment for their conditions are at higher risk of suicide. In order to extend support to those who have served our country, our mental health treatment center in Boca is now offering Veterans in Recovery, a new form of mental health treatment for veterans.

Common Symptoms of Mental Illness

Military service members who have been in war or conflict have experienced much trauma. Frequent exposure to these traumatic events increases the likelihood of mental illness. One of the most common mental disorders among veterans is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As the name suggests, this mental illness results from exposure to trauma and causes a variety of symptoms.

The first signs of mental disorders may be difficult to catch if you don’t know what you’re looking for; however, many veterans have developed a mental disorder due to their line of work. If you’re a veteran or know someone who is, there are general warning signs that can indicate a mental health problem.

Some common signs of mental illness include:

  • Issues with memory
  • Flashbacks of an event
  • Inability to sleep or sleeping too much
  • Depressive symptoms
  • Feelings of guilt or hopelessness
  • Low sense of self-worth
  • Trouble with concentration and decision-making
  • Withdrawal from loved ones
  • Fixation on past events (or career points)
  • Self-harm
  • Substance abuse

Without proper mental health treatment, veterans who struggle with mental disorders may begin to show signs of suicidal behavior. Not only is this a real danger, but mental illness also affects the person’s loved ones. Our mental health rehab for veterans can help men and women who have served our country and are currently battling a mental disorder.
