Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Bipolar Disorder Treatment at Banyan Mental Health

Bipolar disorder is a type of mental illness that is characterized by extreme and unstable moods. While everyone can experience periods of depression or happiness at times, people with a bipolar disorder experience more severe highs (mania) and lows (depression).

The age of onset for this disorder is typically 25, but people of all ages can be diagnosed with this condition. Often, the condition itself can be severe and interfere with the person’s daily life if they do not receive bipolar disorder treatment from a mental health facility.

Types & Symptoms of Bipolar Disorders

Like other mood disorders, there are several types of bipolar disorders.

Bipolar disorder I

Bipolar disorder I is characterized by extreme episodes of mania that last for several days or require hospitalization. People with bipolar I may also experience episodes of depression as well, but this is not required in order to be diagnosed with this condition.

Bipolar disorder II

Bipolar disorder II is characterized by episodes of both depression and hypomania. Hypomania is a much less severe form of mania than the mania associated with bipolar I and can sometimes be mistakenly misdiagnosed as severe depression. In such cases, the patient may be erroneously placed in depression treatment programs instead of a more appropriate program.

Cyclothymic disorder or cyclothymia

Someone with this type of bipolar disorder will suffer from an unstable mood that includes both periods of hypomania and mild depression. While they may experience normal moods for brief stretches of time, these do not last.

Bipolar disorder (unspecified)

An unspecified bipolar disorder just means that the person still experiences extreme changes in mood, but they do not fit the usual parameters of other types of bipolar disorder.

How to Treat Bipolar Disorder

Although bipolar disorder only affects about 2.8% of adults in the United States1, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to get treatment for a bipolar disorder if you are in this minority. In fact, not getting bipolar disorder treatment can exacerbate the condition.

Because there are several variations of bipolar disorder, there are also many bipolar disorder treatment options. Here at Banyan Mental Health, we specialize in treating mood disorders like bipolar disorder. Patients who enter our program for bipolar disorder will work with professionals who are experienced in treating this condition. Not only will they receive one-on-one psychotherapy but also, they will partake in a variety of treatment programs designed to help patients heal physically and mentally. Medication is another common treatment for bipolar disorder and will be monitored closely by our medical staff and adjusted as necessary, if required.

For patients who also struggle with a co-occurring substance abuse disorder, our bipolar rehab center in Florida offers help for addiction with our dual diagnosis treatment. With this program, patients are able to focus on comprehensive healing and getting their lives back on track. Neglecting to address the substance abuse problem during this time may lead to worse problems down the road.
